Really sad to report that a large fire has broken out at the Grande-Synthe camp
in Dunkirk. Many shelters and at least 2 community kitchens have burnt down. All
residents of the camp are outside the grounds for safety, currently homeless.
We’ve set up a new MyDonate page, all the funds we raise will go to buying
blankets, sleeping bags, clothes, hygiene packs & food today. Please donate to
help. SPENDEN: https://mydonate.bt.com/events/dunkirkemergency

Are You Syrious?

Fire and fights escalated tonight at La Linière
The volunteer group Auberge des Migrants have posted alarming information late
today, saying that after a lot of tensions at the camp in Grande-Synthe,
Dunkirk, several community kitchen spaces and some shelters were set on fire.
Later on we found out that incidents broke out later in the night at La Linière
and that reportedly 6 refugees were injured. The fights that broke out in the
afternoon, around 6 pm, among those staying in the camp led to an intervention
by the CRP,who used tear gas inside the camp area. This spread to dozens of
people. Later on, one of the people from the camp was hit by a vehicle.
The authorities have said that 4 people were wounded by knife, one of whom was
hospitalized, and one person suffered injuries on the motorway.

Our thoughts go out to the people affected by the events in Dunkirk. We hope
those 10 reported injured recover quickly and those made homeless are treated
with dignity by authorities. While the fires were started by some camp occupants
who were fighting, it is clear to anyone who worked in Dunkirk that this was an
inevitable consequence of a failure of management.

The camp was overpopulated (in part due to the eviction of ‚the Jungle‘), while
authorities refused to allow the building of new shelters and camp occupants
were sleeping as many as 14 to a four person shelter. Those not given
entry-bands (given out on an arbitrary day in camp) were forced to smuggle
themselves in an out of the camp. The camp was in part run by smugglers who
expected payment of debt for access to the facilities. Sexual abuse of women and
children was widely reported with babies, toddlers, women and unaccompanied
children all living amongst the majority older male population. This is an
unnecessarily tragic outcome of the failure of regional and state governance to
properly accommodate for a refugee populace.

This also of course as a result of continued pressure by the British government
to increase border security and to not provide humanitarian corridors for those
with families or connections to the UK to enter, and to provide those with a
legal right to asylum in the U.K. With the process to transfer there.

Both the British and French have failed these people. Contact your MP, share
with them your thoughts on this incident and ask them to hold the government to
account. Meanwhile please donate to our charity partners Help Refugees who are
providing emergency aid to those affected.

The camp is 80% destroyed.
700 to 800 refugees have been put into a couple of local gymnasiums. API, the
entreprise that was serving meals at La Vie Active in the Calais jungle, is
doing the food distribution for them. However, there is nothing being done by
the governement for he other nearly 1000 refugees who have scattered themselves
everywhere in the surrounding areas.
They will need food, water, emergency blankets, sleeping bags, and new clothing.

I know most if you are asleep in your beds but this is what is happening in
Dunkirk. We are evacuating the camp and providing hot tea, water, flapjacks,
blankets and words of reassurance and trying to give hope. My eyes have no tears
and my lungs full of plastic whilst the police stand and watch. #myheartisbroken

Dunkirk Refugee Children’s Centre

A large fire ripped through the La Liniere Refugee Camp this evening, burning
down the Children’s Centre, other community spaces and many, many shelters. We
are absolutely devastated.
At the forefront of our minds, as always, is the welfare of the children.
Families are in the process of being evacuated off site to safe accommodation.
The children will obviously be traumatised and will need support now more than
ever. Tomorrow we will be coordinating visits to families and Children’s Centre
volunteers will continue doing what they do best, making children smile.
We have lost everything in the centre and we are very short of funds so tomorrow
will be launching an emergency appeal to allow us to buy arts and crafts
materials, playdough and other little bits and pieces to take to the children.
The volunteers are hugely important to the children and their continued contact
with them at this difficult time cannot be undervalued.
If everyone donated just 50p that would go a long way to covering the costs of
what we need to buy and supporting our amazing team of long term volunteers who
have put their hearts and souls into the Children’s Centre over the past 12 months.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us along the way <3

Tonight we are saddened to see the Grande Synthe refugee camp has once again
seen shelters and community kitchens on fire. We are yet to know how or why this
has happened or the full extent of the damage.
Refugee Community Kitchen, L’auberge des Migrants International Help Refugees,
Utopia 56 teams are on the ground with food, blankets, sleeping bags supporting
those that have fled the fires and are once again homeless and in need of urgent
We have set up in a local space and are helping to get people settled for the
night and we have started preparing double the hot food for tomorrow’s
distribution as we believe we will no longer have the community kitchens for the
residents to cook in.
We will keep you up to date as and when we have news…

We really need your help in getting as many EMERGENCY BLANKETS< FOIL BLANKETS
AND SLEEPING BAGS to Dunkirk as soon as possible.
There are many families there.
Please purchase from LeisureFayre as they deliver directly and quickly to the
warehouse in Calais.
Please do NOT take items to the camp but to l’Auberge warehouse or Care4Calais.
We also need groups to do an emergency collection (delivered asap ie the next
few days) of either:
1) HYGIENE PACKS (toothbrush, toothpaste, flannel, razor, tissues, bar of soap) or
2) FOOD PACKS (bottled water, nuts, snack bars, tinned fish)
The need will be on-going and large but for now please focus on the above items,
thank you.

Sounds like this could well be the end of the Dunkerque Grande-Synth refugee camp…

According to the Prefecture and the Fire Brigade:

‚A huge fire tore through the Grande-Synthe migrant camp outside the northern
French city of Dunkirk late Monday, reducing it to „a heap of ashes“,
the regional chief said.
Firefighters said at least 10 people had been injured in the blaze at the camp,
which was home to some 1,500 people, mostly Iraqi Kurds, living in
closely packed wooden huts.

„There is nothing left but a heap of ashes,“ Michel Lalande, prefect of France’s
Nord region, told reporters at the scene as firefighters continued to battle the
flames which were visible from several kilometres (miles) away.
„It will be impossible to put the huts back where they were before.“

The migrants were evacuated and would be rehoused in emergency accommodation,
the prefect said, adding that the Dunkirk suburb of Grande-Synthe had already
made two gymnasiums available.
Lalande said the blaze had been started after a fight on Monday afternoon
between Afghans and Kurds at the camp that had left six injured with knife wounds.‘

If you can spare any cash please donate to the Help Refugees emergency fund to
buy emergency items for the now many homeless refugees in Dunkerque:

Unsere
